The Pomona, CA Area
Located in Los Angeles County in southern California, Pomona is nestled between the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley. It is within a short driving distance of Anaheim, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernadino. The name of the city came by way of a winning entry in a contest for a chance to name the city in 1875. The meaning of Pomona comes from the ancient Roman goddess of fruit; which has no historical significance to the town.
The area was originally occupied by Mexican settlers when it was still part of Mexico until the first English settlers arrived in 1848 after it became part of the United States with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area became a prime location for citrus growing thanks to the railroad system and water from the Coachella Valley and earned the nickname the “Queen of the Citrus Belt.
Pomona has a diverse region demographic with more than 120 churches made up of different religions and denominations. The cultural influences of many of these churches can be noticed n the architectural design of the structures. There are also several colleges in the area including California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona College, Mt. San Antonio College, and DeVry University.
